Bowling Tips: A guide to improving your back-swing and follow-through
In the quest to be a more efficient bowler you would benefit from the following hints and bowling tips. To execute the proper back-swing and follow-through you need to ensure that your back-swing does not exceed your shoulder height. And the correct follow-through does not involve you posing as though for photographer.
To be able to release the ball in the proper manner you need to know how to do a correct back-swing and follow-through.
When visiting the bowling places you will probably have noticed that some bowlers have high back-swings. This can result in one wondering what amount of damage or harm might be caused if the bowler lost his grip on the ball.
Of course the above possibility is not the main concern when it comes to why a bowler would do well to restrict his or her back-swing. Instead, the main problem is that it often forces the bowler to make a mistake which results in loss of control. These days more experienced bowlers choose to limit the back-swing precisely so that they can maintain their control.
Your back-swing should begin the moment you have done your push-away and must be swung straight back. Avoid letting the arm swing around your hips.
Some bowlers have even managed to almost do away with their back-swing completely. Their usual technique is to do the push-away, keeping the ball at their side, quicken their pace somewhat, slide to a stop and finally, they release the ball down the lane.
Your back-swing should never exceed the height of your shoulders, which because of the position that you are in, are lower then normal.
Maintaining control is essential and possible provided your back-swing is not higher than your shoulder level.
Keeping control is not the sole reason why some bowlers choose to limit their back-swing. Doing so results in less hook and ensures that the ball rolls better. It is important to achieve less hook while at the same time not preventing the ball from rolling properly to the pocket.
Executing the proper follow-through.
Like most guides that offer helpful hints on how to improve your bowling this one also offers advice on the proper follow-through. The best technique is to simply allow your arm to swing naturally. Allowing this natural motion to happen will cause the swing to end either in front of your eyes, or off to the side, depending on whether you are left or right handed.
When you release the ball you need to try to do a direct pull-up. By following this method you will find that you will not cross your arm over your body and you will not also pull the ball. This method enables you to release the ball directly in front of you which is the ideal spot.
Among the bowlers who choose to do less of a follow-through are those who also choose to prevent their arm from going higher. For them this is the most effective technique. If they are a right-hand bowler they do a right leg kick and, by stretching out their left arm, they maintain their balance.
There has been quite a rise in unconventional follow-throughs over recent years. You now find bowlers who seem to deliberately cross their arm in front of their body. Some take it so far that it looks as though they are about to take hold of their opposite ear for some reason. There are others who ensure that they do not cross the foul line and hold their arm way above their heads as though they are being photographed. And other bowlers finish off their method with straight arms at their sides.
You might see an experienced or professional bowler using an unusual method or technique but remember, they know how to use it.
There remains one more tip to mention for now. Focusing on the target that you are aiming the ball at is very important but not looking some place else to soon is equally important. In fact, you should keep your eye on the target until you end your follow-through. This will also help you to resist crossing your arm in front of you.
If you are seriously wanting to improve not only your back-swing but your follow-through as well, then the above hints will be of benefit to you.
