Finding Snowboarding HIstory Information

Snowboarding was actually developed back in the 1960s.  It started as a crude sport with home-made gear.  It was not very well known and there weren’t hardware manufacturers for the sport like there’s today.  Even though it is really tough to actually determine who truly invented the sport, or perhaps the 1st snowboard, some hints of its origin can be tracked all of the way back to the 1920s.

Way back then, it was essentially just putting a chunk of plywood in the snow to use as a homemade sled mechanism, just for fun.  Eventually, other similar devices were developed by several different people just out of pure need to provide their kids with fun toys to amuse themselves with.  One such father was Sherman Poppen who developed the Snurfer ( named by his wife ) for his child.  Many people liked the idea of the Snurfer and Poppen began to sell them.  Competitions were developed which in time developed into a sport, but snowboarding was yet to come.  One of the famous Snurfers was Jake Burton.

Burton wished to surf but his mom and dad would not buy him a board.  He adored the Snurfer and began to take part in the competitions where he became widely recognized in the newly created sport.  Later, after Burton graduated from college, he began production on his own line of snowboards.  This line was first to incorporate the employment of ski technology and made Burton’s boards more maneuverable than the Snurfer.  He actually caught the eye of onlookers when he won the Snurfer competition with his own snowboard creation.  He blew away the contest with the maneuverability of his creation and the talents that it permitted him to develop.  Today, Burton’s boards are the most popular kind of snowboards making him one of the pioneers of the sport.

Dimitrije Milovich was another pioneer of the game of snowboarding.  He too developed his very own kind of board back during the time Burton was still riding the Snurfer.  Milovich is credited with helping to raise the profile of snowboarding because he helped to get articles about the game of snowboarding released in magazines like Newsweek, rich kid and others.

In the 1980s, two different snowboarding mags hit the newsstands.  This helped make the sport more recognizable.  Though many followers started to take part in the sport it didn’t increase to the acclaim for other sports until snowboarding debuted as an official sport at the Olympic Winter Games in Japan in the late 90s.  After this, the game commanded a following of 7,000,000 players in the US alone.  Even though it was once said to be a sport of radical, rebellious young men, snowboarding has now become well liked by both males and females.  It’s not gender specific anymore.  Considered an extreme sport, it requires dedication, ability and determination, and can be very perilous.

Snowboarding has gone some distance from its simple origins with hardware made in shop classes and garages to being one of the hottest winter sports across the world.
