Horse Tack: Stirrups
Stirrups are the pair of lightweight frames or rings that attach to the saddle via a strap and hold the feet of the horseback rider in place. This strap that holds the stirrups is designed as such so that the rider can freely move their legs when riding. The uses of stirrups include letting the rider mount the horse, stay supported, keep in control and stay on the saddle. saddlery Being adjustable, the stirrup strap lets the rider maintain their center of balance while riding.
Known as the stirrup leathers, most modern saddles use them in order to keep the rider’s legs freely moving. The stirrups do not attach to the saddle itself; rather, they attach to the stirrup leathers which are adjustable, allowing the rider to sit comfortably, maintain their center of balance and move their legs with the motion of the horse. Should the rider fall, the stirrups do not release on western style saddles, unlike on English saddles.
Designed to detach in case of a fall, safety stirrups are a more recent invention. With the outer branch made of a thick rubber band and leather, safety stirrups are also called peacock stirrups. These allow the rider’s feet to come free from the stirrups should they fall off the mount. A complaint, however, is that the rubber can wear away and break suddenly, making safety stirrups more dangerous than a traditional stirrup.
Traditional stirrups are comprised of what are called the stirrup irons. The irons is the frame or ring into which the feet go and are supported. The most common type of stirrup iron has a tread, an inner and outer branch and an eye atop through which the stirrup leather is threaded. Horse Supplements The tread is grooved for the sole of the shoe. Equestrian bridles The branches are the two vertical pieces that make up the sides of the stirrup ring.
Modern horseback riding would not be possible without stirrups. Some insist that they helped set the course for western civilization, their invention was so important. Stirrups help the rider mount the horse, keep balanced and keep the animal under control.
