Some surefire ways to avoid the push shot
Understanding the push shot is not a problem at all. First, it is quite different to that of the pull shot and the ball you will find moves in a direction opposite to that of the pull shot. Second, this is a mistake made commonly by most beginners. Third, fix to this shot is easy provided you are willing to practice a lot.
The reasons for the push shot
If the pull shot was caused due to the clubface being in a closed position on impact with the ball, the push shot happens due to the clubface being open at the time of hitting the ball. As a result of this, right handed golfers will find the ball moving right of the target line and keep moving continuously in the same direction.
Correcting your push shot can be a challenge. Lucky for you there is a great book that covers everything about achieving the perfect golf swing, The Golf Swing Book
You delay your hit a bit and you can almost be sure of making a push shot. This happens because in a delayed hit, you will often find the rotation of the arms to be much slower during the downswing. This further causes the clubhead hitting the ball at a wrong time, and yes, at the wrong place too. Though, you would still be able to make contact from the inside line of the ball, you will still find the ball moving towards the right.
When the clubface hits the ball sooner than you expected, you will find the ball traveling in a direction not to the line of the target. Actually, this happens because the clubface is a touch too open on hitting the ball, which is not desirable.
Some ways by which you can prevent the push
To help you eliminate the push shot, you will find a lot strategies around, some on the paper and some that can be implemented. But if you are a beginner, there is nothing better than going back to your basics. And the basics say that you need to turn your body ever so slightly to ensure you avoid getting the push.
To hit the ball straight and far everytime you step up to the tee box, is something we all desire. However there’s a lot of people out there saying that a great golf swing can be bought, I’d say there dead wrong. If you want to learn more, Golf Swing Perfection
One of the best and the recommended ways to practice not getting into the habit of hitting push shots is to try doing a weight transfer to the left foot. Be sure to avoid doing this with a club in hand, because in doing so, you could spoil the chances of focusing on the movement itself. Also make note that you only have to move your body or rotate your body slightly, not move it violently to either side.
The one thing you could do after you have practiced the previous step is to pick up the club and practice the same movement with the club. Make note to have the buckle of your club point towards the target at the end of the swing.
Finally the way you release the clubhead over the ball matters. If you play right handed, be sure to keep your forearm turned slightly over the left at the time of approaching impact. This will allow you to have the club in closed position when it hits the ball, which will further result in the ball moving in a straight line.
