The Different Types Of Mens Mountain Bikes
Since the development of mountain biking in the 70’s, there has been an increase in the number of companies offering specialist mens mountain bikes. There are numerous styles of mountain bikes suited to different types of cycling, so before you select a bike you must decide on which type you favour.
Mens mountain bikes are manufactured using high-tech lightweight materials. They have technical gear systems, advanced suspension and brakes. Mountain bikes can generally be categorised into four main styles, depending on their suspension.
These consist of, Fully Rigid, that is a frame with fixed rear suspension and a rigid fork, or no suspension. Hard Tail, which is a frame with front but no rear suspension. Soft Tail, which is a frame with a small amount of rear suspension. And Dual or Full suspension, with a front suspension fork and rear shock.
There are loads of different categories of mountain bikes on the market as well. Including Trail Bikes, Cross Country (XC) bikes, Freeride bikes, and All Mountain (AM) bikes.
Cross Country (otherwise known as XC) mountain bikes are most often lightweight and have only a small amount of suspension at the front and/or rear. They are intended to use on climbs and have quick turning abilities.
Trail bikes are a cross between All Mountain and Cross Country bikes. They are excellent all-round bikes for covereing each aspect of mountain biking.
All Mountain bikes provide a good level of suspension. They are aimed at climbing mild to moderate ascents and descending steep downhills. These bikes are perfect for all levels of rider, adults or children.
Freeride bikes are a bit like downhill bikes. They are built with strength rather than weight in mind. They provide good suspension and are generally made using heavy, durable materials. They are ideal for riding downhill technically.
The choice of which mountain bike to invest in firstly comes down to personal preference of riding style. You should decide what kind of riding you prefer doing on your bike. Do you prefer to ride smooth, easy trails, ascend high mountains, perform stunts, descend fast downhill trails, or just have all-round fun? There are lots of mens mountain bikes on the market covering all activities but it’s up to you to decide which one feels the best that is within your price range.
